Choomen:  Perfection is practicing the correct way. These chomen assignments are designed to build muscle memory, make connections between what you see and produce, and give you a chance to improve your character production skills. You can print out the worksheets you need and use the choomen notes as a guide.

Choomen Guide

 

  1. Be sure your name and period are on the cover, especially if you use a new book

  2. Use pencil only to practice the characters

  3. Write neatly, fit your characters to the box

  4. Always use the correct stroke order to write

  5. Add appropriate furigana/reading to each character as you practice. Add okurigana to each character to complete compound words

  6. Use all the boxes, don’t skip, to complete the page

  7. Self Correct:

    1. Compare your writing to the original

    2. Erase and fix any errors

    3. Check proportion and angles carefully

    4. Practice to memorize

    5. Say the sounds out to yourself-add furigana to each character as you write it

    6. Say the English equivalents out loud

    7. Write only a few at a time and take a break

    8. Continue to practice over a period of time

    9. Contemplate the application of the characters

  8. Budget your time

    1. Don’t wait until the last minute to complete

    2. Turn in the assignments on time

  9. Practice writing more lines

  10. Get help if needed

  11. Add in the date and assignment number before starting each section

  12. Make corrections when feedback is given

Proportion:  use the quadrants to help you find the correct proportion, spacing and composition of each stroke.

Rating Scale

  This is the Key to the feedback. Pay special attention to what you need to fix.

Angle:  use the quadrants to help you find the correct angle, slant, and curve of each stroke.

Direction:  use the appropriate stroke order and direction when writing the characters.

Stroke:  use the correct stroke type- stop, check, lift, when writing the characters. Beware of the curvature of the  lines.
