There are many Japanese Holidays and other celebrations. Some are traditional celebrations (まつり) practiced throughout the country in various ways. Others are National holidays (さいじつ) that allow government workers days off to celebrate.

  • The trivia games will help clarify and measure understanding.

Task:

Create a 3-5 minute live presentation on a Japanese holiday or cultural celebration with vusual aids and an assessment.

Become the "expert" and share:

  • what the event is

  • when it is celebrated

  • what it is all about-it's history and description of the related products

  • how it is celebrated- common practices

  • why it is celebrated-cultural perspectives, beliefs, traditions

  • how the celebration was influenced by other things

  • how the celebration has influenced other products, practices, or perspectives throughout time and space

  • how it has evolved throughout time

  • how it compares to other non-Japanese events, celebrations, traditions

Parameters:

  • Select a partner (you can chose to work alone if you prefer, but you must complete all tasks alone)

    • Each person must have an equal part in the presentation

    • Each person will be graded separately on their contribution to the final presentation

  • Select an event from the list provided-no duplicates in each class

  • Do your own research

    • Divide the task between each member

    • Minimum 3 different sources per person

    • Keep notes gathered from various sources

    • Create a bibliography for all research and content gathered

    • NO paragraphs, long descriptions or reading off the slides!

  • Live presentation must be no shorter than 3 minutes, and no longer than 5 minutes

    • Presentation will be done in class

    • Have your visual aides ready to project onto the Promethean board in class

    • Present simple information in Japanese-use the grammar patterns we have covered so far

    • Complex thoughts, descriptions, etc. can be done in English

  • Presentation skills

    • Each person must be loud and clear enough to be captured on video

    • Make eye-contact with the audience

    • Do NOT read off the screen or from notes!

    • One 3x5 index card can be used to remember key points, quotes, etc, but should not contain any "paragraph" writing

  • Create a trivia quiz to use as a follow up for your presentation

    • Use Google Forms to create your quiz

    • must contain 5 questions based on information presented by your group

    • Questions can be in English or Japanese, depending on the purpose and type of question

      • if the audience must interpret what is said in your presentation, then questions and answers can be in English

      • if the audience must show understanding, then the questions and answers should be in Japanese
