About the World Language Learning Center

at Moanalua High School:

The World Languages Learning Center provides students with a variety of world language classes that incorporate technology and authentic language-learning experiences. Currently, classes in Spanish, Japanese, Hawaiian, French, German, and Chinese are offered at Moanalua High School during the school day. After school, enrichment language courses are offered to all Hawaii Public High School students in languages such as Italian and Korean, according to student interest and enrollment.
These offerings are enhanced with opportunities for students to hone their emerging language skills through e-mail correspondence and video-conferencing with students in the respective target language countries. Our program also strives to take students beyond the novice level of proficiency through an annual speech festival, school visitation, application of technology, travel abroad opportunities, and community internship experiences.

Serving over 1000 students enrolled in language classes at Moanalua High School: Hawaiian, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese!

We look forward to a wonderful year of language exploration and learning.
If you are a student enrolled in a World Language Class at Moanalua High School or are a parent of a World Language student, you will be asked to fill out the official WLLC Survey before the end of the year. Check with your child's teacher for the survey site, log in and password.

If you would like volunteer for activities sponsored by the WLLC, please contact us. We are always looking for judges for the speech festival, native language speakers and chaperones.

Thank you for supporting the World Language Learning Center at Moanalua High School.
We hope that we will be able to continue to provide services and tools for students in the World Language classes.

Testimonial

“Having gone through the Moanalua Japanese language learning system as part of the World Language Learning Center has given me a better understanding of Japanese culture and has really help me communicate in the language”

Annual Events

Annual World Language Speech Festival

Every spring, the World Language Learning Center sponsors a Speech Festival to highlight student oral speech presentations in each language and at every level. All students in the WLLC are required to participate in this ever growing event.

Students taking a World Language at any public high school in Hawaii are encouraged to participate as well. Judges, from most post-secondary institutions, private schools and other native speakers, give up their time to volunteer for this amazing event.

If you are able to join us as a judge, please use the sign up form on the Events page. We would love to have your expertise!

Moanalua-Kokutaiji Sister-School Exchange

Every fall, Hiroshima Kokutaiji Senior High School sends their entire Junior class to Hawaii for their class trip. The entire World Language department participates with their students in the day's festivities. There is time set aside for small group conversations, teaching activities and presentations. The highlight of the day is the Kokutaiji performance for the entire school during lunch on the football field. We look forward to many more years of wonderful exchanges.
